The Giver is unusual in that it explores a different dystopia/utopia: one in which the very root of every emotion, representation of uniqueness and nuances therein is eradicated systematically. Each child is assigned a community purpose after years of careful molding, and even the words that represent the feelings that are now defunct – happy, angry, sad – are discouraged and even punishable. Jonas is a young boy tasked with the singular purpose of being given the memories of the past, and the journey he partakes in order to receive them change the fundamental way he sees the world. Even in a utopian society devoid of crime and differences, Jonas is enlightened that he’s been robbed.
