The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

About the Book

This futuristic story is set in a time post uprising, where the government maintains control through taking two “tributes” from each district to participate in a bloodthirsty, one winner takes all competition to remind the districts to be grateful for what they have. The story follows a female character named Katniss who volunteers to take the place of her younger sister as tribute. Both Katniss and the male tribute from her district, Peta, survive due to a miscalculation on the part of the game officials and some quick thinking and daring on the part of Katniss and Peta. The story is underwoven by the sad conditions experienced by those who live in the less-fortunate districts and the increasing drive for revolution. The two sequels carry the story to a surprising and impressive finish that shows what an uprising and revolution can bring to such a society.
