Considered by many critics to be the greatest dystopian novel ever written, London's The Iron Heel ditches science fiction as its basis and seems to project from its publication in 1908 to see a world that we are experiencing today, with the gradual disintegration of the middle class in favor of a ruling class whose sole purpose is to keep the lower classes where they are. No doubt London's greatest display of his socialist views, The Iron Heel is a rendering of oligarchic tyranny at its worst.
In this story, a tyranny of control takes over the US and causes the middle class to be left with nothing, while those who are already poor are kept under the thumb of the ruling faction. This story was written in 1908, over a century ago. However, the story has ironic similarities to recent events and shows just how possible situations like this can be in real life.
