The Island of Dr. Moreau is sometimes absent from lists of dystopian novels, usually because other books by H.G. Wells are so much more obviously dystopian. At its heart, however, this is a vision of the dark side of Darwinian evolution run amok as a result of man’s interference. The world envisioned within the confines of that island place Dr. Moreau directly within the center of dystopic figure of madness like the Benefactor and Big Brother. Moreau’s splicing of human and animals prefigures the type genetic manipulation that fuels the fear of many conspiracy theorists today looking around every corner for the encroaching presence of a dystopic governance.
