The Purple Cloud by M. P. Shiel

About the Book

The story is a transcribed narrative of the mediums channeling of a text that has not happened yet. It is about a millionaire who sponsors $175 million to the first person to stand on the North Pole. The book foreshadows that the expedition will be anything but uneventful. When the protagonist reaches a north pole he finds a fantastic world, but is slowly being overcome by an encroaching purple cloud. People and animals around him begin dying and he is soon left all alone to pilot the ship by himself. Unfortunately, when he goes back to collect his prize, he finds that almost everyone is dead. The question is whether he will survive to repopulate the earth, or whether it is curtains for the human race.
