In this story, equality is the most important factor in life. Therefore, by the age of 16, everyone is brought to “pretty” standards, even if that means extreme cosmetic surgery. The population is left without any chance of individuality and closely watched by the government in order to make sure everyone is conforming. The story makes you think about the shallow standards of Western culture and the focus on looks, rather than the important factors in life.
